I've written here many times about the necessity of being prepared to deal with various types of terrorist attacks ~ or shooting sprees carried out by pissed-off professors who've been denied tenure ~ and as part of those suggested options, I've proffered that it's not necessarily wise, when considering the probable increase in body-count caused by a delay of a good-guy counterattack, to wait for the cops to show up before you act to save lives, if that's the decision you make. Well, guess what: now some cops are saying it's okay for the first officer on an active shooter scene to begin a counterattack alone.
Here you have it: a very well written article here by which you can see why some police trainers are now saying that when people are being killed by shooters ~ whether at a school, mall, church, concert or a busy intersection ~ it's okay for the first cop on the scene to act without standing around, waiting for back-up.
Well, I'm going to assert again that we are the first responders. One way or another, people on the street, in the school, at the mall or the grocery store or the jazz concert on the pier are the first to respond to shooters. There are only three choices:
- Freeze... you will die
- Flight... you might live
- Fight... you might die
It's that simple. If people ~ that's you, by the way ~ don't choose now and begin to prepare now, on that day they have no choice but to fall back on all their vast storehouses of training. Training? Yes, training: something they've done time after time over the years, so much so that it's second nature to them. Because it's easy and requires no originality or courage, most people have trained themselves over time to be just like everyone else; to be kuhl and PC and with it. That's why morons wear t-shirts celebrating Cuban and Chinese mass-murderers, and vote for inexperienced, arrogant community organizers.
Back to training. The level to which too many people have trained themselves is that of having a fatuous faith in their pre-panic hearts that they're just as bad as their favorite movie tough-guy, which they convince themselves of by memorizing and muttering tough-guy movie lines. And, of course, they all want to look bad-ass by holding a pistol like this clown:
or shooting a long-gun like this cup-cake:
Hey, you're going to be alone out there. Take a look at this video to get a real idea as to how much you can expect security officers ~ whether proprietary or private ~ to help those frozen or fleeing. Take a look here to see how much the largest mall in America cares about you and your safety. And with them leading the way, setting the laughable industry standard, do you have any doubt that all the other malls ~ and other venues ~ will continue to circle-jerk you with security that... ain't? How long are you going to be the pivot man?
We can't even get security officers to smack the shit out of some belligerent little bitch when she's trashing someone before their very eyes. Why would anyone ever expect any of them ~ especially contract guards ~ to do anything other than observe and report, which can be accomplished by anyone with a conscience and a cell-phone. It's not up to federal, state, county, municipal or tribal governments. It's not up to the local hospitals. Or the local SWAT operators. Or the local patrol officers and deputies. It is entirely up to you to be prepared.
I can't make this more clear: you take care of you and yours. You can be that guy; the one who gets talked about for doing all the right things at the right time, the one who saves the day, like this guy, David Brenke. It didn't take any great training regimen for him to do what he did, just situational awareness and desire. Think of how things could turn out if on that day you've already decided what actions you'll take and have trained for them, you're aware of what's developing in front of you and have some desire to prevent evil from being triumphant... and then act with speed, surprise and audacity.
You can be that guy on that day. If you're trained and equipped and committed and the cops are delayed for some reason, you can make a difference, even if you're alone.
Am I telling you to do so? Nope. You decide, as always. But, if your decision is to prepare so you can act, you need to get your shit in one bag, be ready for shooters, and more shooters.
Gotta bounce for now. I'm posting the cool sketches below just because they're cool. If you're interested in cop/combat art, you can find this exceptional tactical artwork here.

A lot of man power we have in this blog. Thanks for the photos.
